Full program description

Speech–language pathologists commonly treat children exhibiting diverse and complex developmental issues, including those involving challenges with sensory processing or integration. Most treatments are sensory-based and involve providing specialized sensory input to the child or adapting the environment to allow the child to benefit from treatment approaches. This course will provide participants with practical strategies to implement in the daily treatment of children with sensory processing  difficulties.

Components of this course include:

Understanding Differences – Defining sensory processing terms, understanding typical sensory development and recognizing differences in development.

Determining where you fall? - Where participants will learn about their own sensory system and how their sensory issues affect their relationships and their work.

Examining Case studies - Participants will explore the issues of four different case studies, discuss sensory diagnosis of each and provide strategies for working with children with these specific types of sensory differences.

Opportunity to practice - Participants will be given scenarios and asked for ideas and strategies to be shared for each scenario. There will be a short question and answer period at the end of the session.

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • Understand sensory processing systems and terms.
  • Identify and understand the different quadrants of sensory processing according to Winnie Dunn, OT.•
  • Identify your own sensory issues.Recognize sensory processing differences in children and when to refer
  • Participants will leave this training with practical strategies to implement in daily treatment of children.

This course is offered for 0.6 ASHA CEUs (Introductory level, Professional area).
